The Tsaatans are the people of the great taiga of Khuvsgul province. The Tsaatan people live in the northern part of Mongolia, in Khuvsgul province, which is admired for its beautiful nature and the magnificent lake of the same name. Historians believe that the Tsaatangs migrated from Tuva and settled in Khuvsgul taiga. Tsaatangs are a national minority with their own language, customs, religion, and unique lifestyle. They speak Uighur language. Their religion is Shamanism. The Tsaatan people’s main way of making a living is to herd the raindeers and enjoy the benefits of hunting in the taiga. Duration: 19 days
You will be picked up from the airport and driven to your hotel. After a brief rest, we will go out and explore the city of Ulaanbaatar. We will have lunch and you will have an opportunity to exchange your currency into Mongolian tugriks. You will visit the State Department Store and see the Chinggis Khaan Square, visit the center of Buddhist religion, the Gandan monastery. You will also visit the newly opened Chinggis Khaan National Museum, and have a dinner aftewards. The evening will be at your disposal, so you can have a good rest before the start of the trip. We will have breakfast at the hotel and begin our trip. We will drive from capital city Ulaanbaatar towards West, South-West and arrive in Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes. The sand dunes are unique, as they are stretching over 80 kilometers in the middle of fertile pasturelands. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery and specific flora of the area, walk through the dunes, ride Bactrian (two-humped) camels. You will spend a night in a yurt camp.
We will move towards the remains of Mongolia’s ancient capital Kharkhorum. You will be able to see Erdene Dzuu, the first Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, established by the Bogd Gegeen Zanabazar – the first supreme spiritual authority of Tibetan Buddhism in Mongolia. You will also see the Turtle rock, a must see landmark not far from the monastery. Then we will drive to the Tövkhön Monastery, one of Mongolia's oldest Buddhist monasteries, established in 17 th century. Hiking through the rugged rocks and larch forest on a special trail will be a challenging yet interesting exercise as it will allow you to learn about unique religious traditions of Mongolians. Overnight on the banks of the Tamir River in Arkhangai Province (Spend a night in a yurt camp)
We will travel towards Terkhiin Tsagaan (White) lake. We will go see the dormant volcano Khorgo and visit the pit at the national volcano park. You will spend the night in a yurt camp.
The trip continues to Khuvsgul province. We will spend the night in Shine Ider Soum, Khuvsgul Province. (Spend a night in a yurt camp)
Free Day: Hiking in the area. On this day, we can see from the inside how the nomadic Mongolian families live. We will explain to you the year-round lifestyle of a nomadic Mongolian family, the roles and responsibilities of family members. We will tell you about Mongolian yurt and other interesting facts about lifestyle of Mongolians. You will spend the night in a yurt camp.
On this day, we will go to Tsagaan Nuur Soum by going through the beautiful Darkhad Blue valley. This area is a large watershed with 248 small and large streams, 377 lakes and ponds, and 24 springs. Also, this area has a unique natural formation with sharp, pointed, triangular peaks and high rocky mountains. It is a must see destination of the foreign tourists, visiting Mongolia. You will spend the night in a yurt camp.
Today we will leave our cars and ride horses to the taiga where the Tzaatangs live. (Spend a night in a tent)
After spending the night in the desert taiga, we will wake up in the morning, drink tea and continue our trip. It is a country where the Tsaatans live far away from the civilization, still following the rules of their ancestors. On this day, we will go to their settlement and spend the night in a Tsaatan’s hut.
On this day, we will get to know the livelihood of the Tzaatan family. The Tzaatans are the last reindeer-herding tribes left in Mongolia. Only 44 families have preserved their traditional way of life. The Tsaatans ride the reindeers, make tea with reindeer’s milk, eat their meat, use the hides to make household items for nomadic lifestyle. (Spend a night in Tsaatan’s hut)
Our next destination is Tsagaan Lake. Overnight on the road (overnight in a tent)
After arriving at Tsagaan Nuur soum and resting for a while, You can go for a walk and visit the local shamans to ask your fortune and ask questions regarding your physical and mental issues. It is a custom to thank the shamans by tipping them a few tougriks. (Spend a night in a wooden house)
Departure to Murun, the capital of Khuvsgul province. (Overnight at the hotel)
We will leave Khuvsgul province and spend the night in Bulgan province.(overnight in a yurt camp).
Today we will visit the famous Hustain Mountain National Park. The number of horses has reached more than 390 since the area was taken under special protection in 1993 in order to reintroduce wild horses (Przewalski's horses), which were extinct in nature. Deer, marmots, Mongolian antelopes and 213 species of birds inhabit this national park and their numbers are steadily increasing. Take a walk through the park territory and see rare wildlife such as the red-listed zebra. (stay in a yurt camp)
Return to Ulaanbaatar. After lunch you will visit the cashmere outlet store. In the evening we will see a concert of a folklore ensemble and enjoy a farewell dinner in a nice restaurant afterwards. You will spend a night in a hotel.
